Spring 2009 Makeup Trend Report

Spring 2009 Makeup Trend Report

Partly due to the current world economy, many people are not spending as much money on makeup as before. It is also not surprising that many of us are looking for classic, wearable and trend-resistant colors.

If you are the kind of makeup fan that looks forward to unique shades, you might have already been disappointed with most of this season"s lineups. It seems that, for spring 2009, many brands are coming up with wearable colors that don"t easily date. But I find it very interesting to look into how various brands interpret "wearable colors", and here are three shades spring 2009 collections.

- Soft neutrals

Sonia Rykiel Spring 2009 Collection

Sonia Rykiel Spring 2009 Collection

(images and information from
www.soniarykiel-cosmetics.com)

Sonia Rykiel"s website has been updated to feature the spring 2009 makeup collection. The lineup includes:

- Glossy Lip Color (10 shades)

- Cheek Color Powder (4 variations)

- Eyeliner Pencil WP (Waterproof)

- Mono Eyeshadow (13 new shades)

It is quite an eye-catching collection, with three new products and colorful additions to the Mono Eyeshadow range. The new lip gloss has a nice range of shades (I am drawn to the cooler end of the lineup), while the iconic Sonia Rykiel horizontal stripes are again used for the blushers.

The collection will be out in Japan on February 6th, 2009.

CEO pessimism

CEO pessimism

Chief executive officers are a glum lot. According to the latest PricewaterhouseCoopers survey, most CEOs around the world are expecting a long and hard recovery. The survey found that only 15% of CEOs in North America and 15% in Western Europe were confident about their growth prospects for the next 12 months. Not much more in Central and Eastern Europe (21%) Asia Pacific (31%) and Latin America (21%).

Clearly, all signs suggest we could be in for a long hard haul. Still, economic history tells us that market come a lot faster than anyone expects.

Facebook and the Meaning of Friend

Facebook and the Meaning of Friend

Friend: the word already covered a pretty broad semantic piece of ground. Then came Facebook, and it made the term even more nebulous.

I have 38 friends on Facebook - including my two daughters, a couple of other relatives, former co-workers from past jobs, some high school friends I haven't actually seen since Carter was President, some colleagues I work with in cyberspace (but will likely never meet), etc. They're my "friends."

Pamela Newton had an entertaining piece recently on friendship and Facebook. She looks at the question: "What is a Facebook friend really worth?" She puts the question in an emotional context (which is probably appropriate for talking about actual friendships). And she comes up with one of the best descriptions I've every heard of what good Facebook really is....

Concours in the Desert

Concours in the Desert

Pebble Beach, Villa d'Este, Amelia Island.... watch out! Your concours may be world class but there's a bright new competitor ready to join you in the list of "events not to be missed." It's the Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance in Palm Springs, California, heading into its second year in 2009 from February 28 to March 01. You shouldn't be surprised, for Palm Springs is home to many classic car owners and Hollywood stars escaping from the pressures of their, uh, mundane jobs. The area's history includes the very first Southern California road races in 1950. Considered the golden era of road racing, these were also social events, with racers and spectators enjoying the nightlife offered by the area's legendary clubs and hotels.

"Our event will focus attention on the unique history Palm Springs has in relation to these historically significant cars, as well as the celebrities and drivers that made them famous." said Paul Merrigan, event Founder. Included among the special events is "Classic Cars on El Paseo", a Saturday afternoon of classic cars and fabulous events where visitors can view gorgeous cars while enjoying shopping, special events, and prizes at the El Paseo Shopping District. On that same day the Architecture and Design Council presents a lecture at the Palm Springs Museum by noted automobile designers Ron Hill and Jason Hill. Yours truly will be in attendance at all the Palm Springs events, recording them for Classical Drives. Stay tuned during the upcoming weeks.

Ring Finger Length Linked To Success

Ring Finger Length Linked To Success

A study by Cambridge University scientists of highly pressured London traders, whose jobs requires risk taking and quick responses, found the most successful had long ring fingers in relation to their index fingers.

Not only did traders with long ring fingers make on average six times more money, they survived more years in a cut-throat world which weeded out the weak and unprofitable.

Back to the Fifties and Loving It

Back to the Fifties and Loving It

This baby looks like a combination of several small sports racers of the 1950s and in a way it is. But the HB Special is actually brand new and in very, very "limited production." Developed by two Dutch brothers, Tino and Paul Huet, it is based on a modified Triumph TR6 chassis, using the original straight-six bored out to 2.7 liters using Honda pistons.

Three versions are available, starting with 160 hp or 180 hp, topped by a supercharged engine delivering 210 hp. A wide range of options can be had, including color and interior trim. The retro road racer was intended to be available on an exclusive basis as the perfect ride for the brother's European classic rallies. But demand is such that Tino and Paul are putting it into production, though with a maximum of 10 cars per year you may have to join a long line to get one. You'll also need to come up with €67,000 for the base model or up to €80,000 for the supercharged version. Autoblog has more info, along with a photo gallery.

Questions On A Postcard: He Loves Me More!

Questions On A Postcard: He Loves Me More!

Dear Ms. S.,

What lovely penmanship you have!

In my experience, relationships are always somewhat unbalanced. Regardless of the situation, whether it’s marriage or a summer romance, one person is always more invested than the other; that’s just how it is. It keeps life interesting & maintains that deliciously ridiculous merry-go-round effect. If you have to be in one position, I tend to think that being the person who is more loved is preferable, but of course it does put you in an awkward situation. It’s a sort of stasis. There are feelings of guilt. You wonder if you’re both wasting your time. You think, ‘Maybe I should let this person go so that they can find someone who loves them as much as they love me’.

What you do about the situation is entirely up to you. I can’t say what is right for your life, & plus I have faith that whatever you do will be what you were meant to do. The universe has your back.

What I will say is this. Even when we do our best to seek out a more magical & meaningful existence, life is full to overflowing with average things & mundane realities. Dull jobs, exams, corporate attire, standing in queues, early mornings, tired eyeballs & many, many interactions with the great unwashed. There are all these things which fill us with a vast nothing. Love should not be one of them.

The fact that he is “nice” is not enough to keep you together. Plenty of people are nice & good. That doesn’t make them lover material. That doesn’t mean they are the person to whom you should “hitch your wagon”.

Learning to make yourself happy should be one of your primarily preoccupations. If you feel more joy when you’re by yourself than when you’re with him, then you know it’s time for something to change. The thing with learning to make ourselves happy is that sometimes it takes a leap of faith. Sometimes we have to break up the status quo with a big hammer in order to get there. Sometimes it’s more of a demolition derby, but hey. You gotta do what you gotta do.

There is a period of malaise in every relationship. The initial sparks & fabulousness begin to fade, & it’s just night after night of getting takeaways, watching television, etc. Some people feel that once they get to a certain age, it’s easier just to settle down with someone who doesn’t make them want to commit mass homicide, so they do. But some people would rather be in a relationship with someone who makes them feel electric. You get to choose which camp you’d rather summer holiday with.

If this boy doesn’t make you want to explode with joy & excitement, if thoughts of him DON’T dance like sugarplums in your head, if the mere mention of his name doesn’t fill your body with fireworks, if you don’t spend hours daydreaming about your future together… then you’ll be happier doing your own thing, sugarplum.

Take that time that you spend together, twiddling your thumbs, & invest it in yourself. Cold & calculating as it may sound, your returns will be far greater. & who knows — in that time, you might just meet someone who really captures your imagination. Someone who you could love more than you ever imagined possible.

Fingers crossed.
