Piercing - A popular art
Body piercing is the process by which soft tissues of the body are perforated in order to provide new apertures in which external objects like jewelry can be placed. There are various cultural facets that are reflected through body piercing. It can be linked to spirituality, conformism, religion, fashion, eroticism or sub-cultural identification. Different types of body piercing include ear piercing, navel piercing, nose piercing, tongue piercing, eyebrow piercing and lips piercing.

The history of body piercing dates back to the era of ancient Romans who used to pierce their nipples for wearing special rings that would help them keep their cloaks in place. The Africans had much more diverse reasons for body piercing - reasons which even the western body-art devotees can't dream of!

In Western countries, the art of body piercing is going through its second birth. Due to the efforts of a few fine high-end fashion craftsmen, body piercing has gradually repositioned itself to lawful luxury, from being looked down upon as belonging to the punk-style category. This has also led to its sky-rocketing popularity.

From the medical point of view, the art of body piercing requires specialized knowledge and skills on the part of the performer. The process involves cutting or puncturing body tissues followed by inserting a piece of jewelry into it, if it's not handled with care, it might lead to medical complications like allergies or infections. Hence it is advisable to go for body piercing only under professional or clinical supervision.
